Timothy Fund Testimonies

Timothy Fund

Given God's call on my life to church planting, I cannot imagine where I would be had I not done a church planting apprenticeship. Through my mentor and my time as the outreach and assimilation pastor, I learned to speak to where people are rather than where I wished they were. I went from doing ministry where it was safe to venturing into hostile territory. I went from trusting my own gifts to trusting Christ to work through me. I went from being dependent on the love and respect of others to understanding my utter need and dependence on God's love and kindness. I learned how to deal with well-intentioned dragons, how to move the "mature" from doctrinal debate to ministry into people's lives, and how to truly live out the priorities to which I had always given lip service--God, my wife, my children, and then my sheep and my neighbors. I learned a lot about failure in my two years as an apprenticeship, but that failure was used by my mentor and by God to show me how great my Hero is and how often I need to be rescued. Thank you for making the Timothy Fund available to provide me this invaluable experience.

By God’s grace, I’ve enjoyed several benefits through the church planter apprenticeship program. In my church planting context of New England, I’ve been blessed to have a mentoring relationship with church planter/pastor, Mel Sensenig. He planted Trinity Presbyterian in Providence, RI in 1997. He’s been able to share with me his experiences in this unique and challenging climate – especially how we need to appropriate the gospel to ourselves through the joys and sorrows of church planting! And now, as God graciously enables, Trinity is sending me out to plant a daughter church in the university town of South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Since Trinity is a newer church with limited resources, the Timothy Fund has proven crucial in supporting our vision to advance the gospel in Rhode Island through a multiplying church planting movement.

The Timothy Fund was a tremendous blessing to me while I was being mentored by Rev. Ray Cortese of Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church in Central Florida. The resources from this fund supplemented my salary and enabled me to travel to Ray’s successful church plant in Crystal River each month. I have benefited immensely from his friendship and wise counsel. In addition to assisting me with these unique travel requirements of my apprenticeship, the Timothy Fund resources also helped me by paying for training conferences and counseling.
