Vision and Mission:
The vision of Renew Yazoo is to facilitate the participation of First and Second Presbyterian Churches of Yazoo City in the restoration of our local community through the declaration and demonstration of the love of God shown to us in Christ Jesus. We desire to glorify God by demonstrating His love and compassion through mercy ministries and in doing so to foster the building and strengthening of biblical relationships and promote unity in the body of Christ.
Why Yazoo:
On April 24th an F4 tornado a mile and three quarters wide with 170mph winds tore through Mississippi from the River to the Alabama line. In Yazoo county alone 110 houses were completely destroyed and 340 houses were damaged. The neighboring county of Holmes suffered similar damages. This gives 1st and 2nd Presbyterian churches a very tangible way to demonstrate the love of God shown to us first.
Volunteer Teams and Work:
Much of the work after a tornado is construction. The debris clean-up goes fast and often requires heavy machinery to lift large trees out of the way and off of houses. Now as rebuilding begins skilled and unskilled volunteers are needed. In order for your team to be the most successful we suggest you recruit volunteers with construction skills that are able to work along side those who are willing to help. We are able to accommodate teams up to 30 people with a suggested ratio of around 1:5 skilled to un-skilled. Supervision will be provided along with all of the necessary tools and supplies but we do need all the help we can get from those who know how to build.
Lodging and Meals:
Teams will be housed in the church manse. Teams will need to bring their own bedding, linens, and air mattresses. The church multi-purpose room and commercial kitchen will be available for meals. A continental breakfast and supplies to make sack lunches will be provided along with dinner Monday and Wednesday night. Teams will have to fend for themselves for their dinners other nights. We do suggest one night out to eat in the community and there is always Pizza Hut to order pizza. We also promise not to make spaghetti or Stouffer’s lasagna to provide you with those easy meals to plan. Yes, there is a grocery store nearby.
Cost:
Cost will be $15 per person a night to cover food and utility costs.
