Upward Bound Base Camp

Upward Bound Base Camp in Maine. Church Planting. Recruiting Now for Summer 2008 Missions

What do you do with a dozen or more high school kids for a week in the summer? How about help plant a church? That is what they have been doing in Northern New England for the past five summers.

  • VBS/Mercy Ministry Combo—mornings teaching and afternoon or evenings serving the physical needs of people in the community.
  • Sports Camp/Service Project Package—Coaching youngsters and providing a cup of water for the thirsty are proven ministry approaches. Come and give hands to this love.
  • Music Camp—Providing music education to children in the community as a part of God’s lordship over the Arts and recognition of His beauty. If you are a music teacher, music lover, or could help set up chairs this may be the mission project for you.
  • Building Team—Can you swing a hammer? Why not put it to use with a church-planting team in New England? Construction teams are needed to help with facilities, church-planters’ homes, and with community outreach projects.
  • Neighborhood Blitz—How do you get the word about a new church plant out to thousands of neighboring homes? Come host a block party, canvass neighborhoods and pass out fliers. A carwash can be a great way to serve the community and spread the word too. Come and bring your suds.
Here is what some of the team have said:
"My life was definitely changed! I was totally taken out of my comfort zone. I did not even know how to handle it. This trip was the start of the change to open my mind to new things. I am not saying that I am some dare devil that would do anything but I can never think of a time when I would even consider going in the ocean or doing hours of yard work. I hate being outside and I hate being sweaty and dirty even more but it was something that I needed to do and I don't regret doing it."

"We were there for the kids and I loved every minute. I loved that it was more of a challenge than [at our church] because these kids did not already know us. We had to work with them and earn their respect for the first time. And it changed my view . . . I learned so much on this trip."

"I loved going to Portland."

"What I think about a lot from Portland was VBS itself. In the beginning of the week almost every kid was anti VBS. It took a lot to convince them that it was fun to learn about Jesus. At the end of the week you could really tell that Jesus had worked in their lives that week. They were a lot more open to learning about Jesus and singing songs about Jesus. It really helped me gain confidence about myself knowing that I helped these kids see Jesus even if it was just a little bit."

"It was really tough don't get me wrong, but it was a real eye opener. I got to see how much [the man we helped] loved the Lord. He seemed to have a great passion for his home. I cannot imagine living in what they call a home. I am very blessed to have what I have here. The Lord really challenged us as a whole I think working on the service project. I was so excited to hear they loved their garden. In a way I wish I could have done more to help Franklin and his wife."

"VBS was amazing. I mean, end of discussion."
