CAPTAIN STAN BEACH, CHC, USN, RET., ASSOCIATE COORDINATOR OF CHAPLAIN MINISTRIES AND ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF THE PRESBYTERIAN AND REFORMED JOINT COMMISSION ON CHAPLAINS AND MILITARY PERSONNEL (PRJC) was recently INFORMED THAT THE US NAVY CHAPLAIN SCHOOL ESTABLISHED THE CHAPLAIN STANLEY J. BEACH STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD.
This award is presented by the Commanding Officer of the Naval Chaplain School, upon the recommendation of the students and staff, to the graduate who most exhibits exception potential for leadership in ministry to the Sea Services. The recipient is so honored for the enviable traits of stellar personal example, an ability to motivate others, outstanding military bearing, academic excellence, infectious enthusiasm and mature judgment.
In presenting the award the Commanding Officer introduced the Chaplain Stanley J. Beach Student Leadership Award with the following Comments:
Chaplain Stan Beach, who is here with us this morning in the audience, served twenty-seven years in the United States Navy Chaplain Corps(1960-1987), including a tour of duty as the Director of the Naval Chaplains School (1982-1985). A highly decorated officer who sustained severe injuries in Viet Nam, Chaplain Beach maintained a positive attitude even in the most trying of circumstances. Though severely wounded by an artillery round and in danger of having his left leg amputated, he was still able to say: "Every year of my ministry has been better than the one before. I guess a chaplain leaves a part of himself, sometimes physical, but always spiritual, at every duty station." Even in retirement today, Stan Beach continues to serve the Navy and Navy Chaplains as a devoted mentor and pastor, a courageous leader, and an exemplary servant of God's people.
